Mental Health Program
The purpose of this initiative is to develop, plan and implement demonstration or pilot mental health programming that will address AHWS objectives and priorities within parameters established, from time to time, by the Joint Management Committee. Mental health demonstration or pilot initiatives involve the provision of non-residential activities and services for individuals and/or families, that seek to improve Aboriginal health; are culturally appropriate and culturally competent, and complement and link to existing services or programs to continue to build service capacity.
The range of direct services and programming may include, for example: Intake, screening, assessment and referral for mental health clients; Specialized multi-disciplinary teams to provide service/support to people with diagnosed mental health conditions; Crisis Intervention, early intervention and peer counselling and support for at-risk or high-risk individuals and their families; Specialized case management and aftercare (post-treatment) support for individuals with mental health conditions living in the community; and initiatives to provide or improve access to contemporary and Traditional therapeutic mental health services, including clinical consultations with registered professionals and/or Aboriginal Traditional Healers.
