Shelters

Women’s/Family shelters and safe houses have been established in a number of locations, building on the network of existing Aboriginal services, to provide a safe, short-term residence for women and their children who are seeking safety from partners, families or selves. Programming may include client based non-residential services such as follow-up/aftercare and support, and participant based activities to prevent violence.

There are 9 shelters.

  • Anishnaabe Kwegag Gamig, Roseneath (120 km northeast of Toronto)
  • Dbinooshnowin Crisis Centre, Wiarton (north of Wiarton)
  • Three Fires Ezhignowenmindwaa Women's Shelter, Walpole Island (Wallaceburg)
  • Ganohkwa Sra, Ohsweken (Six Nations)
  • Ie thi nisten:Ha lethi non ronh kawa, Cornwall
  • Temagami, Lake Temagami
  • Kabaeshiwim (A Place of Rest), Southampton
  • Onyota'a:ka Family Healing Lodge, Southwold (20 km southwest of London)
  • Red Cedars - Tyendinaga Safe Home, Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory (Deseronto - Belleville area)
